The Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit against DeVry University has the VA warning veterans about the varsity .
The Federal Trade Commission has filed a lawsuit against DeVry University, alleging that its advertisements deceived applicants about the likelihood that students would find jobs in their fields of study and be offered superior salaries post-graduation.
In response, the Department of Veterans Affairs has suspended DeVry University’s status as a Principles of Excellence institution following its own review of the lawsuit’s details.
This Principles of Excellence status is acquired by educational institutions that comply with parameters like providing students with a customized form covering the entire cost of an education program, ending fraudulent and aggressive recruiting techniques and misrepresentations, accommodating service members and reservists absent thanks to service requirements, and ensuring accreditation of all new programs before enrolling students.
As a results of the lawsuit, a flag has been posted on all DeVry University campus pages within the VA’s G.I. Bill Comparison Tool.
“The FTC is alleging that DeVry University Lawsuit used deceptive marketing tactics to draw in students and therefore the Department of Education notified DeVry of its intent to impose limitations on the university supported related conclusions,” consistent with a press release from the VA. “VA is additionally conducting compliance reviews in the least DeVry campuses to live compliance with federal regulations.”
The suit, which was filed in January of this year, alleges that DeVry wasn’t forthcoming in its marketing and recruiting to prospective students, and it’ll require the institution to cease using certain materials and knowledge when advertising the post-graduation employment outcomes of its alumni.
“Millions of usa citizens look to education for training which will cause meaningful employment and good pay,” FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said during a press statement. “Educational institutions like DeVry owe prospective students the reality about their graduates’ success finding employment in their field of study and therefore the income they will earn.”
DeVry spokesperson Ernest Gibble replied, “DeVry Group is extremely disappointed by the VA’s action taken today. The FTC’s allegations that the VA cites are just that – allegations – and that we believe are without merit. In fact, we filed a motion to dismiss the FTC complaint on March 10.
DeVry University is quite famous for its history with numerous lawsuits and investigations, because of their, allegedly, falsely claimed employment rates, salaries of their graduates, and claimed Devry university scams in general. It is also said that they provided inaccurate information on loan practices and the quality of their education. DeVry University Lawsuit and investigations have started in the 1990s, and there were few such cases since then.

DeVry University, one of United States’ for-profit colleges founded by Herman A. DeVry in 1931 and officially accredited as a university in 2002. It was a training school before it became a university, called DeForest Training School. At the beginning they were teaching radio and projector repair, then gradually they started including televisions and other electronic equipment.
On 31 March 2018, the university stated in its reports that they have 25,235 students: with 17,936 undergraduate students and 7,299 graduates. In their DeVry University Lawsuit, students claim that the school defrauded them about many issues.
DeVry University tuition prices were $15,835 for the 2017/2018 academic year, which makes it 10% more expensive the average for-profit college tuition of %14,395.
Reading about its history, the number of students, their notable alumni, 45 locations across nearly 18 states of the United States, nothing seems to be problematic with DeVry University. Unfortunately, it is the opposite as the biggest Devry University scam suggests.
According to Federal Trade Commission’s Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, some of the students have been having a hard time to land decent jobs at the end of their studies and had to work as a delivery driver, waiter, etc. Approximately up to 50, 000 students have been affected by the university’s fraud.
